Energy Fun Fact:
The Georgia World Congress Center consumed the same amount of electricity this past month (April 2012) as any given month in 2001. The difference between the GWCC now and in 2001?
1.1 million square feet! Our Building C opened in 2002, which makes April’s accomplishment pretty spectacular.

We hosted the Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC) Atlanta chapter yesterday at the Owner’s Club inside the Georgia Dome. The Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA) is a member of the organization, whose mission is to transform the global meetings industry through sustainability.
Tim Trefzer, GWCCA sustainability coordinator, spoke to the group about our campus-wide efforts to green all three facilities through recycling, composting, conserving energy, working closely with our customers and more.

The Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport opened yesterday, May 16, 2012, cementing Atlanta as the global gateway to the U.S. The project, a $1.4 billion development, adds 12 international gates, creating a 40-gate international air-travel complex. The new terminal will service nearly 80 destinations in more than 50 countries, and inbound travelers will be connected to more than 150 U.S. cities. The Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal eliminates the luggage rechecking process thanks to upgraded customs and border patrol facilities. In total, the new terminal will create 2,000 jobs and is one of the largest job generators in Georgia in several years.
Read about the airport’s history in this Atlanta Journal-Constitution article.

Our friends at GSU Hospitality are now in London after talking with us last week about our experiences hosting the ‘96 Olympics. We wish them a great trip!
Today was the day that we have all been waiting for! Finally, we’re off to London, but no good story comes without delay. We ended up leaving an hour in a half late but nothing could dwindle our excitement as we stepped off the plane. Everything was smooth sailing from there.
Fun Fact: Our West Plaza, located between the Georgia World Congress Center Building C and the Georgia Dome, is 48,000 square feet and can be configured so many different ways!

On Friday (5/15/12), Georgia World Congress Center General Manger Mark Zimmerman spoke with a group of Georgia State University hospitality students about the 1996 Summer Olympics. The students, from a class taught by Dr. Debbie Robbe, are headed to London to see a behind-the-scenes look at the Summer Olympics during the weeks leading up to the games.
Zimmerman told the students all about the preparation that went into hosting the Games, including construction of Centennial Olympic Park. He explained how exciting it was to have so many activities taking place on our campus, including the International Broadcast Center at the Georgia World Congress Center, sporting events at the GWCC and Georgia Dome and hosting attendees from around the world at the Park, a community gathering place.
